Metro Ride #521

I got into the metro and the guy ahead of me looks at his reflection and dances. Maybe that’s what late nights do to you, they allow you to be more expressive. Anyway, I get myself a seat and the gate of the metro stays open so that more people can board it, it reminds of those even-odd days in Delhi when bus number 507 that I usually took would stop until they got a good number of passengers on board.

I sit on the seat with an empty mind and stare at my phone. After a few stations, a gentleman comes and sits on the empty seat on my right. He has his headphones on and is listening to Ae Kaash Ke Hum. I used to love that song once but then I listened to it so much that I started disliking it, does it ever happen to you?

So, the metro continues to find its way on those zig-zag tracks until it enters the dark underground tunnel only to move like a snake through its burrow. After two stations, I’ll have to get down and find my way home.

Doors will open, people will board and deboard the metro until this moving box gets to its destination.

Bhaag Daud (Race)

The doors open and you exit only to find others walking in the same direction. Some are running but most of them are rushing and wading their way through others.
Suddenly you see that there is an insane rush on the exit gate and you automatically speed up as if it will have a major impact on your life which we all know is a lie.

A villager lady is at the exit gate trying to figure her way out of the gate but she is clueless with the token in her hand. A few of the dressed up people shout on her while a few are giving her advice. She is panicky and drops her token leading to further delays. This continues for some time and after a while, the station is deserted. A pigeon flys by while the other one is looking for food. They walk all over the floor until the next metro arrives and a hoard of people rush towards the exit gate.

Now as you read this, I want you to move along and be fast because the last thing I want is to be late at the exit gate.

Until next time, my friends. Until next time.

A day

I took the metro after some time again today. A ride that I’ve been taking almost on all weekdays for the past two years now.
Everything felt different and I found myself out of place. On getting out of the metro, people started moving fast leaving me behind. There was a rush at the metro gate and I looked around to find some familiar faces but all I got to see were the tensed faces of people. People who were running late, people who weren’t happy and people who were happy. I don’t know for sure, I just saw and tried reading.

Now I’m writing this in the metro and it’s not as full as it usually is because I left a bit early. I have plenty of space to stand and I had planned to read a book but choose to listen to a few songs.

It’s a normal day in the lives of people in Delhi NCR. Welcome to it.

Thanks for reading one of the random and absurdly ending post. Do tell me how you’ve been.

Observing someone

There is a guy in his early 20’s in the metro, he is reading a book and is engrossed in it. He is thin and wears baggy jeans and a shirt that looks faded. There is a bag on the floor between his legs and he is facing the window but he is not paying attention to anything but his book.

Metro for several stations has been underground and now it emerges to an elevated track and the surroundings change with sun filling the whole metro coach with light. Suddenly, it feels like that others also exist. The guy with the book looks up and stares outside the window, he is thinking about something. He then places his thumb on the page and closes the book and looks on to his right for a while and then on to the left and then gets back to his book.

Something must have caught his attention and I guess it was that metro coach he was in today was silent and not as crowded as they usually are at that time. He must have been wondering what was the reason behind that silence and where were those people who usually talked or laughed loudly.

I see him every day, I am him.

Sliced Apples

Warning: This is not a fiction.

I was standing and reading my book in the metro while a fellow traveler who happened to have a seat was eating his apples. Now the apples were sliced and were  nicely placed in the little round container. He was munching on them and occasionally offered them to his friends as well. The box came into my sight a few times, as the train moved and so did my book and the apples would come into sight.

I all of a sudden had this thought, a funny one I should mention. The thought was what if I pick one of the slice from the box very discreetly, would that guy even notice? I mean he was busy talking. And then I laughed to myself and wrote the incident down.

If that guy or someone from the group is reading, then next time please offer it. Just kidding.

Returning home

What a day to travel in metro. I’ve a book in my hand which I’m trying to read and I’ve got three groups of people around me. One on the left and two on the right and all three groups are talking real loud and occasionally one of the members of each group laughs loudly.  There are other people talking to each other but their voices become inaudible because of other groups.

Reading isn’t really possible right now so I’m writing this. I’ll try and read after posting this. Anyway the weather changed today and this is how it looked a few minutes ago.

Metro Morning

I wanted to post here for a long time and for once if you have read some of my previous posts, you would want to shoot me right now. Why? Because I say the same darn thing all the time. I know that is old and I need a new statement to support my absence here *completely ignoring the fact that nobody really cares*

So, today I can talk about my day, because that usually gives me something to talk and write about and you for once get to know about a day in my life. No I am not telling you everything about my day but only a thing or two. I will choose the interesting part or will try and make it interesting. That works? I am talking to myself, yes!

I will talk about the metro rides to work. In the morning as I wait for the metro to arrive, I walk from one point to another and then I take a glance at my watch and I repeat the same thing. I observe people exiting other trains, getting down from stairs, some are in rush while some are literally pushing themselves to move. If you see things in a different manner, they start appearing either funny or you start seeing everyone as an individual( if you are watching people). Now you might be thinking, that’s nonsense. How can I see them as individuals, aren’t they individuals already? But you didn’t see them that way, I didn’t at least. They were just a bunch of people, a blob moving from point A to B or from A to C.

But as I was waiting for my metro to come, I saw each person and studied them. The expressions on their faces, their face reflecting lack of sleep, lack of will to go to work, some smiled and that too genuinely while some rushed because they were late and would probably be getting a lecture from their seniors. Oh well, there is so much variety.

Then my metro came and I got in after calculating what coach would have some free space so that I could take my book out which was The Book Theif and read it. I did get a place and I read my book. Good journey? Yes!
